Fabrication Process / Commission Process

wood maquetteThe fabrication process of a sculpture begins with a design, which is constructed into a small wood maquette. The images on this page show the original maquettes used by Chessmar to create his sculpture designs. The first maquette was scaled up to create the fabricated steel sculpture - Perspectives. The second maquette was used to create the cast bronze figure - Limbo. Once the design is agreed upon, Chessmar, sometimes, fabricates a full size wood model to examine on site. Subsequently, he fabricates the actual sculpture and supervises the installation.

Limbo maquetteIn certain instances, it is possible to superimpose a computer generated model onto the prospective client’s property. This technique allows the client to visualize a variety of sculptures on the proposed site, which enables the client to see how their property would actually look with a range of hypothetical Chessmar sculptures installed.

In the fabrication process, the choice of materials becomes a key factor in the design of the sculpture. Chessmar fabricates in steel, stainless steel and bronze. Although all these materials can be used for indoor or outdoor sculptures, stainless steel and bronze are more suitable for outdoor installations because they stand up to the elements. Because of the natural aging factor: i.e. rust., most outdoor steel sculptures are painted. However, in the event that the artist intends a natural patina, nature is allowed to take its course. Because outdoor sculptures are subject to the natural elements, they need to be periodically maintained. Of course, indoor sculptures require less maintenance.
